Diamonds Are Forever...a bloody, message had no meaning to Tamara's
husband, but she knew its meaning all to well. This seemingly random inscription
meant everything she's struggled to hide from her husband and family was about
to be revealed.
Karma is hell to pay, but if she wants to save her family from the past sins of
her past, she's going to have to put a little street justice into play and do a
little blood spilling of her own.
Toya Morton-Swanson
is
taking no prisoners with her new debut novel...
“What the hell is that?” Tamara whispered to her husband Steven as she wiped the
sleep from her eyes.
BANG! SMASH! CRASH!
The sound of breaking glass resonated through the early hours of an otherwise
peaceful Sunday morning. Steven jumped from the bed and glanced out of the
bedroom window, stumbling over his feet as he struggled to adjust his eyes to
the dark bedroom. His eyes widened with shock as he noticed the shadowy figure
of a woman in his driveway with a crowbar.
“Steven what’s going on?” Tamara cried out as she grabbed the back of Steven’s
shirt as she too peered out of the window.
Their jaws dropped as they watched the mystery woman climb on top of their brand
new 2004 Lexus Coupe. The woman began jumping up and down on the hood of the car
and then began wildly swinging the crowbar at the front and back windshields.
Glass shattered all over the interior of the once immaculate car.
“Oh fuck that!” Steven gasped.
He grabbed the cordless telephone off of the nightstand and dialed 911. As
Tamara stood in the window the shape began to look familiar. Then the person
glared up at her. She heard the woman exclaim before she jumped in a Ford
Explorer that was waiting at the curb.
“That’s for you Tamara, you fucking lying bitch!”
Tamara gasped and held her hand to her mouth and whispered.

Book Review: Anthony
“ Tony” Thornton is a young black man working hard to be somebody. While
home from college Tony is shot in a gang related shooting while saving
the life of a little girl named Arianna. Watching in the wings is Kyra,
a pretty, street smart young lady with a bright future in modeling. When
Kyra picks up Tony’s jacket from the scene of the shooting, full of
blood and a bullet hole she becomes overwhelmed. Kyra take the jacket
home and washes it wondering who this good looking local hero is. Kyra

is until Tony hits the lottery and wins five million dollars. Suddenly
Kyra isn’t the angel he thought she was. Kyra is spending money like
crazy and when Tony shuts her down to save for their future, Kyra turns
evil.
Tony also goes to the hospital
often to visit little Arianna and her mother Pauline with whom he has
developed a close relationship. Kyra the angel doesn’t like it one bit.
Pauline knows that Kyra witnessed the shooting but Kyra says she doesn’t
remember any of it. Tony’s family feels something just isn’t right with
Kyra. Along with the mix is an ancient charm given to Tony by an old
woman. A charm that is magical in Tony’s hand.
This is a love story gone mad with
a street fiction backdrop and a lesson on how money can bring greed and
greed brings evil. I can’t wait for part 2. Harris had crafted a
bittersweet novel that holds you to the end. A fast easy read. A
wonderful debut.

Clarke Harvey has made a mess of her
charmed life and doesn't know-or want to know-how to fix it. The drama begins
when Clarke finds herself caught in a love triangle with a man she loves for his
charm and a man she loves for what he can provide. By the time she takes matters
into her own hands, things really get wild.
When a stranger helps her to unleash the untamed vixen inside she delights in
her sexual freedom. But when the man she really loves marries someone else she
becomes man's worst nightmare.
This dramedy by exciting new novelist Tracy L. Foster follows Clarke on a
decade-long journey in and out of outrageous situations primarily of her own
doing.
You’ll laugh at the wild and crazy times of Clarke and her committee of friends.
You’ll share in the joy and feel the pain as Clarke precariously rides the
roller coaster that she calls life.
About the Author:
Exciting new author Tracy L. Foster always has used the written word to express
her inner thoughts. Daily entries in her journal as a young girl turned into
short stories as a teenager and novellas as a young adult. "Writing is cathartic
for me," Foster remarks. "It was only recently that I figured out that other
people would find pleasure in my words."
A friend spotted an unfinished manuscript tucked behind her couch, began reading
it, and strongly encouraged her to complete and publish it. That manuscript is
This Bitch Is Crazy, Foster’s first novel.
The dramedy follows the protagonist, Clarke Harvey, on a decade-long journey in
and out of outrageous situations primarily of her own doing. "Clarke seemingly
has everything going for her on the outside, but is crazy and out of control on
the inside," the author states.
Like Clarke, Foster is a strong, educated woman who worked in a variety of
fields before answering her true calling. Also like Clarke, Foster delights in
close friendships. Unlike Clarke, "I’d like to think that I’m sane," Foster
remarks with a laugh.
The title, Foster says, is one to which Generation X-ers and Baby Boomers alike
can relate. "The phrase ‘that bitch is crazy’ is commonly used among my circle
of friends, so since Clarke is crazy, that phrase is appropriate for my book."
Readers will laugh as Clarke and her friends show no restraint during their wild
and crazy times. As Clarke rides the roller coaster that she calls life, readers
will share in her joy and feel her pain. The novelist says that many readers can
relate to Clarke because they are like her, even if they are not willing to
admit it.
Foster threw in some steamy scenes as well. "Clarke’s metamorphosis to vixen may
have some readers wiping their brows and going for a glass of water," Foster
jokes. The author’s next novel will be The Devil’s Workshop. She also is working
on the sequel to This Bitch Is Crazy, entitled Bitch, Please.
Foster holds a bachelor’s degree in humanities with specializations in English
and religious studies from the University of Louisville. She is an entrepreneur
in the Midwest whose ventures include Foster House Publishing. SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK

About the Author
DAMON "AMIN" MEADOWS was born and raised in South Philadelphia, and is the proud
father of two beautiful daughters. In 1993, at the young age of 21, he was tried
and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole—being only a first-time
offender. Through his faith in Allah, "AMIN" has been successful in the
appellant process—given a release date that will grant him his freedom in the
near future.
------------------------------------------------------
JASON POOLE was born and raised in Washington, DC and is the father of a
teenaged son. He’s also Essence magazine best-selling author of LARCENY—written
while serving time in prison. In 1996, JASON POOLE was incarcerated on a drug
violation charge, currently serving an illegal sentence, due to an erroneous
enhancement—awaiting appellate relief any day now.
DAMON "AMIN" MEADOWS AND JASON POOLE conducted interviews together while writing
CONVICT’S CANDY, gathering facts and pertinent information from the actual
transsexual, inmates, both gay and straight, as well as documented personal
observations and events the two writers have witnessed while being incarcerated.
They’ve also done research on HIV and AIDS, wanting to become more knowledgeable
on the ongoing crisis that affects us globally. Although most of the characters
and events in this novel are true, the story has been fictionalized to protect
the guilty...
The two talented writers’ purpose for writing CONVICT’S CANDY was to expose what
was really going on behind the prison walls, in addition to educating readers
everywhere, especially those in high-risk urban areas, about HIV transmissions
and how the crisis is leading among African-American females.

Book Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. I
couldn't put it down. In the beginning I truly felt Andy (Candy's) pain. I also
appreciate the truth about what goes on in the jails. I truly beleive that these
things happen and unfortunately out sisters, brothers and children pay the

Very well done Damon "Amin" Meadows and Jason Poole.

First time author Dwayne Murray, Sr., was
compelled to write an urban novel that magnified the strength of a woman living
in the mean streets of New York City. In his book, The Mouse that Roared, Miss
Sandra Lyte is the mirror image of beauty, intelligence, intensity, vitality,
and wit. Sandra Lyte’s personal attributes laid dormant deep within her, but
when the time is right, she digs deep in her soul to muster up the nerve to
stand up for herself. Sandra’s beginnings in New York City were very turbulent.
She ran away from home thinking she was “grown” but quickly recognized how naïve
and immature she really was. Just like fairy tales, a “prince” or a “knight in
shining armor” comes along and promises love and happiness. He offers the
“American Dream” on a silver platter all neatly packaged with a home, children,
and a puppy and let’s not forget the ever alluding “white picket fence.” “WAKE
UP!” it’s just a dream because slowly but surely the dynamics of this urban
“Romeo & Juliet” love affairs takes on a life of umbrageous affairs involving
drugs, gangsters, top officials and police officers involved in the shadiness of
the underground. Sandra’s “Romeo” is a self-made ghetto entrepreneur who holds
powerful trump cards in his back pocket. Sandra’s life quickly snowballs into an
ever ending battle of life vs. death. The Mouse that Roared is filled with
action-packed twists and turns, the reader will eagerly anticipate turning to
the next page. The reader will ride the emotional rollercoaster of cheering,
cursing, praying, crying, and hoping the characters gets what’s coming to them.
The Mouse that Roared is an urban “fictional” novel however, author Dwayne
Murray, Sr. writes about real life situations that takes place on the streets of

Overtime
by Connie G. Barrett -Morris Publishing/Trade Paper-
$14.95
Four men, two women and one job add up to nothing
but trouble in Connie Barrett's sophomore fiction novel, Overtime. After her
husband is handed a seven year prison term, Latoya Randolph (Toi) is left to
face the world alone. Although wrongfully imprisoned, Larry is in fact guilty of
another crime. Shortly before his incarceration, Toi caught him in their bed
with another woman.
Toi's short saved life has been plagued with one disappointment after another.
With dead end temp jobs that keep her locked in survival mode, she struggles to
raise her three-year-old daughter. But making ends meet in Newark, New Jersey is
not her biggest obstacle. Forgiveness is something that she understands in
theory, but even after much soul searching, she still can't seem to make it the
one reality that may determine the fate of her marriage. And just when it seems
that her faith can't be tested any further, a surprise visit from her twin
sister, Tia-Ann (Tia), proves otherwise.
Identical - but their looks are all they have in common. While Toi is the more
reliable and stable of the two, Tia on the other hand has her street smarts,
speaks her mind and has never worked a day in her life - legally. Running from
problems of her own, Tia tries to convince Toi that they can take full advantage
of the overtime offered by Woodlawn Mental Health Services if they were to
pretend to be one person. Not only could Toi get rid of her sitter and save
money, but namely it would keep Tia from having to go out and find a measly
minimum wage job to call her own. It's not until a scare at the sitter's that
Toi gets caught up in her scheme.
But posing as Latoya is not as easy as Tia thought it would be, especially when
it comes to Jackson. He's handsome, available and head over heels crazy about
Latoya. Only it's the more introverted, spiritual side of Latoya that has him so
smitten. On a mission to get him to see her as the real deal, Tia's wild antics
bring her otherwise reserved sister to the forefront of office politics, scandal
and finally at odds with each other. Think things can't possibly get more
heated? Throw Mario and Sean into the mix for a roller coaster ride of love,
lust and betrayal amidst a climate of social unrest and injustice as well as a
host of undiagnosed mental disorders. In the end, will forgiveness come too
late? And will overtime cost the sisters more than they bargained for? SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK

to pursue her first love and to write her first book, Ain't Understandin' Mellow
- a very emotional tale of how life's challenges can be approached and overcome
with perseverance and faith. Her characters use wisdom, growth and acceptance to
find self-contentment in a not so kind
world.
Michelle Davis has penned a novel that everyone can relate to and enjoy. Her

is a read that you will think about long after the story ends.
"In this wonderfully intelligent novel, Kirsten
Dinnall Hoyte explores a young woman's complicated struggle to come to terms
with her fractured past. Full of vivid characters and lovely sensual details,
Black Marks transports its readers effortlessly between the many worlds
Georgette inhabits. A splendid debut." -Margot Livesey, author of Banishing
Verona
"Black Marks is an absorbing, highly imagined, and beautifully written novel.
Kirsten Dinnall Hoyte rewards her readers with a brilliant interweaving of
stories that capture a young woman's movement into and out of different worlds
as she searches for identity and attempts to make sense of her life." -William
Julius Wilson, author of The Declining Significance of Race
Black Marks is the story of Georgette Collins, who wakes up one day in her early
thirties to discover she had no past. Everyone has had the experience of not
quite fitting in at some point in their lives, but Georgette has grown up in
between worlds: black and white, gay and straight, wealthy and working class,
West Indian and American.
Throughout, Georgette tries to piece together these fractured worlds from her
grandmother's stories and her own fragmented memories, but she cannot make sense
of her experiences. Each reinvention of herself is more disastrous than the
last. Now, Georgette, an African-American librarian, is completely isolated; she
is floating, unable to make connections with family, friends, and colleagues.
Many mornings she wakes to find a man in her bed with no idea how he got there.
Days are spent in a self-created bubble, which both protects her and separates
her from others.
The narrative weaves back and forth in time, through Georgette's childhood in
Jamaica to her teenage immersion in Boston and New York nightlife, and into the
reclusive silence of her adulthood, of the library. The story's ambiguities
remind the reader that there are not always easy answers for why one person may
suffer, and neither are there always identifiable paths to recovery. Although
depression and sadness play major roles in Georgette's life, her first-person
voice is intelligent, funny, and capable of both warmth and irony. SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK

It is estimated that roughly five hundred people
move to Atlanta Georgia per day. Many come in search of a new life; others
arrive as a means of escape from the monotony of their former lives, anxiously
awaiting any opportunity to recreate, and lose themselves within the vast
newness that has become Atlanta Georgia. Brian, Glenn, Malik, and, Sean are four
such individuals who also came to Atlanta for many of the same reasons. Their
story however, is unique in that they came to Atlanta in an attempt to embrace
change only to discover that in order to make a change one must first be willing
to change:
Brian’s constant attempts at buying love would ultimately lead him to discover
that real love is priceless.
Glenn’s arrogant love quest coupled with his inability to control his lustful
desires is what will make him become his own worst enemy.
Malik’s resentment, and contempt for the shallow nature of young black women
became the reason for his treatment of them as objects, and prevented him from
opening up and allowing himself to be loved.
Fate steps in just as Sean attempts to start a family and convert to living a
quality life; bringing it all to an abrupt end. SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK
The
Family II: Life After Death by Antonne
M. Jones -Clear Vision Ltd. (October, 2005)/Trade Paper- $14.95
The Family (Book
1) is about four young black men on a quest for money, power and fame. "Ghetto
Glory", as we in the hood call it. In route to achievement, some unexpected
obstacles interfere with the mission. Obstacles such as murder, betrayal and
greed.
Excerpts from The Family II...
You're out of your mind Lauryn. You sound like a disgruntled and scorned Black
woman and you need to get over it. You thought I was going to die in jail,
didn't you? Now you're married to this loser and unhappy, so you take it out on
me. You divorced me, three years after I got locked-up, remember?" 'You arrogant
and shallow jerk. That's what you think this is all about? It has nothing to do
with that. It has all to do with what you did in the past and how I'm paying the
price for it now.' "What are you talking about?" 'I'm talking about living with
HIV. You fool.' The moment she said that, the room got dark and everything
seemed to stop. 'Yes, I'm living with HIV because you were out screwing all
kinds of women without protection. I may die soon. Get out of my house! Get
out!' She ushered me out the door and I just sat in the car stunned. I wasn't
sure of what to say or do, or if Shatora had overheard the argument. She got in
the car without asking what her mother and I were arguing about, so I gathered
she wasn't listening. Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy our outing because there
were too many thoughts running through my mind. Was I infected with HIV? Whom
did I get it from? Did I infect my wife? Should we get tested? My world had come
to a thunderous halt. All this time, Lauryn was infected and never said
anything, blew my mind. I always assumed HIV and AIDS was a gay man's disease,
or only contracted by intravenous drug users. Not knowing what to do, I called
Carmen and begged her to come home and promised to straighten up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the advice of Sam, I decided to invest money in other areas. In
particular, the entertainment business. I took a meeting with two brothers who
wanted to start up a record label and artist management company, and wanted me
to act as an investor and silent partner. They were ambitious and determined to
be successful in the business and I liked their energy so I came on board. They
know my reputation on the streets so they knew to come correct. Of all people, I
was introduced to them by Eve, who I also invested in. She and renowned
celebrity fashion stylist, Anthony Henderson, opened an upscale boutique on
South Street in which I was also a silent partner.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, there was going to be an important meeting in Scranton between Sam
and a few bigwigs in the mayor's cabinet, and I was told by Sam I would be in
attendance. The focus of the meeting was the Philadelphia Airport and how they
could gain control of the business and unions which operate within the terminal.
You may wonder why this group was so concerned about the Philadelphia Airport. I
questioned this myself. However, after listening to the details and getting the
facts of the matter, I was blown away. In terms of aircraft operations,
Philadelphia International Airport is one of the nation's busiest. There are
approximately 486,164 takeoffs and landings annually which equate to 28.5
million travelers a year. There are 29 airlines with more than 600 daily nonstop
flights to more than 130 domestic and international cities, meaning it's only
two hours by air to 50% of the U.S. population and six hours nonstop to
California, Great Britain, Europe, and Latin America. The most important fact is
that the airport is a major economic player, generating an estimated eight
billion in annual revenue for the region. Some 200 businesses tied to the
airport provide jobs for nearly 22,000 workers. After being educated I fully
understood their reasoning for wanting a robust hand in the airport commerce.
My thinking was also along the lines of drug trafficking which has always been
huge business. Having people in place at the gates would allow us without
difficulty to import and export on an international scale. The mayor wasn't
present at the meeting but his brother was the topmost speaker. He made mention
of having the ability to utilize his brother's connections to obtain 'no bid
contracts' for businesses which would be under the umbrella of his company
'Keystone Management Group'. Also in attendance was a gentleman by the name of
Dominic Sarrcone who owned Sarrcone Brother's Concrete and Cement. They were the
main suppliers of concrete for building projects in the city and had Mafia ties
with the Gambino and Merlino Crime families in New York and Philadelphia. Having
this guy on board would allow infiltration of the local unions who were
representing the workers and also provide the necessary muscle when need be. The
big guys figured the venture would not be as successful without the Italians and
Jews in some capacity. Dominic also bought insight with regards to taking
control of massive business. His associates maintained total control of all of
the seaports, airports, and labor unions in New York. Those guys represented the
real Mafia. In attendance also were Barry Weinstein and Cory Washington. Mr.
Weinstein was Chief Loan Officer of NRC National Bank and Mr. Washington was
head of the Minority Business Development Center in Philadelphia. They both
would provide no-interest loans or grants for minority start up companies in
exchange for future business with their institutions. Across the board, it would
be a win-win situation for all who were part of the clique. These men were even
offered free legal services to incorporate their companies which would be billed
to the City and paid for by the taxpayers.
"In order to do business in Philadelphia you have to pay to play"', Sam
explained.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Yo, I'm going to introduce you to the hottest chick who works here. Let me go
and get her. Give me a second." After a few minutes he returned with a beautiful
caramel skinned young woman with blond hair. "This is my man, Anthony. Anthony
this is Eve." "Hi Eve it's nice to meet you." "It's nice to meet you too. "Do
you want a lap dance?" "Wow. You get straight to the point. "Ain't no use in
beating around the bush is it." "No, I don't want a lap dance but I do want to
know why such a pretty girl like you works at a spot like this?" "The same
reasons handsome guys like you come to places like this." "I'm here talking
business. "I'm here taking care of business and getting my paper so stop judging
me." "Why are you getting so offensive cutie, I was only asking a question?"
"Because I hate when you niggas come here trying to kick it with the same old
lines and the same dumb questions." "I apologize if I upset you, I didn't mean
any harm, I was just sparking conversation." Your apology is accepted and I
apologize too for being short tempered. Eve reminded me of Kimmy but with taste.
True, Kimmy possessed flair but Eve gave the impression of a smart girl
stripping to pay her way through college. Throughout the night she would make
her way to where I was sitting to make short conversation. Despite our rough
start we managed to share a few laughs and exchange telephone numbers. Something
she claims to rarely do with customers. SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK

The Newspaper Boy is the story of a young Irish boy who triumphs
through sheer determination and application of will to intellect. He rises to
the level of his potential, becoming a successful attorney in pre-WWI New York
City. The setting is a working class Irish neighborhood on New York City's Lower
East side. We meet Eric as a young teenager who, while immensely proud of his
Irish roots and family, pursues the dream of success in America. He does not
feel his ancestry is antithetical or exclusive to success, or vice-versa. In
fact, the story describes his melding of the two. We follow him from his first
job as a newspaper boy, through success at high school, heroism in combat, and
into the vaunted halls of the Ivy League, rubbing shoulders with the denizens of
American society. Although he chases the success that his willpower pushes him
to, he never forgets his roots, especially not in a society that seems unwilling
to allow him to do so. Eric's ties to his family are solidified by his brother,
Pat, and his first love, Kay. Pat has simultaneously adopted and rejected the
philosophy of their father, acknowledging the necessity of hard work, but
eschewing it nonetheless for an easier but riskier life at the law's edge.
The Newspaper Boy originally appeared as a short story in a collection of
writings by the author, to be re-released as a book in its own right. The author
has clearly devoted a lot of time to humanizing the people he describes, without
over-simplifying or lionizing them. The reader is never unaware that Eric bears
the pride of his people, but he instinctively knows that he must understand the
world he wishes to join in order to successfully navigate within it. The author
delivers Eric's story in a matter-of-fact style that makes his integrity the
main character. Although the book is a novel unto itself, it is clearly written
with a varied audience in mind. The writing is clear and straightforward, but
rests on the lushness of the author's description. I found the book's pacing to
be consistent, with interruptions only where detail was needed. The book keeps
its focus on Eric, and those in his life, but in doing so draws a rich tapestry
of turn of the century life in New York for a young Irish man.
It is clear that the author has drawn on a number of historical sources to
describe a slice of Americana. Although the book focuses on Eric's
transformation into a "bona fide American", Eric is never derisive to his own
heritage. The author clearly enjoys his subject, and introduces the reader to
history that may only be known only to those a part of it. He showcases the
contributions of the Irish community to New York City at large, and eventually
WWI. He also reveals the depths of anti-Irish sentiment that permeated the city.
It is with a professor's eye that he describes the setting for his novel, but
communicates it in an easily understandable and enjoyable format. Although I had
initially assumed this to be a book for young adults, I found the book easily
lends itself to an older and broader audience. As a student of History myself,
the book references bits of history in the form of "teasers", which inevitably
lead the reader to want to know more and investigate, and in so doing, continue
the reading-learning circle. Reviewed

The Civil War, which started in
"Bleeding" Kansas, comes to life in this book. Sissy! is about compassion and
forgiveness in an incredible era of hatred and violence. The novel opens in 1857
with an Underground Railroad rescue of a slave girl. War breaks out, and in
1862, a Lawrence, Kansas woman, Jessica Radford, follows a path of vengeance
when she finds her parents murdered and Nellie, an adopted former slave girl,
missing and possibly killed as well. While three of the border ruffians who did
this deed are hung, the leader, Sam Toby, escapes. Obsessed with abolishing
slavery and seeking revenge for these murders, Jessica, disguised as a male
soldier on a Tennessee battleground, is about to kill the wrong man. But she is
challenged when she confronts Sissy, Nellie's guardian angel.
Sissy! brings the reader into the hearts and minds of people who shaped Kansas
history—and the history of this country…people like James Lane, Colonel Martin,
General Rosecrans, …newspapermen like John Speer, who was not afraid to tell the
ugly truth about slavery… unknown heroes who worked through the Underground
Railroad…brave women who disguised themselves in order to fight alongside
soldiers…and men like William Quantrill, who thought nothing of committing
terrorism on a defenseless town. The reader of Sissy! will feel the heartbreak
and tenacity of the men and experience the courage and sacrifice of the women of
that bygone era.
Book Review: Reviewed for Kansas
Libraries by Roy Bird
(Federal Projects Coordinator/Library Consultant)
Sissy! incorporates the largely untold stories of women, the Underground
Railroad, race relations, and plan people of the border into the background of
“Bleeding Kansas” and the Civil War as it involved Kansas. Author Tom Mach won
the J.D. Coffin Memorial Book Award for best novel for this, his first book
length fiction in a planned trilogy. It is filled with emotion and compassion,
hate and ambivalence in the blend of fiction and history.
The book includes a huge number of characters and finally brings all their
individual stories together in the impactful climax. It is decidedly sympathetic
to Free-Staters and obviously pro-Union, and as such it reflects the values of
Kansans during those trying times…Nonetheless, its value lies in its depiction
of women and of some of the African Americans of the era. Mach offers persuasive
fictional episodes of his characters that are composites of historical or
apocryphal events. Recommended for public library adult fiction or Kansas
collections.
A Review from Heartland
Reviews (April, 2004):
Reviewer: Bob Spear
Rating: 4 hearts
Sissy! is a winner of the J.D. Coffin Memorial Book Award for Best Kansas Novel.
This historical novel is the first in a trilogy about a young woman, Jessica
Radford, who loses her family to “Bloody Kansas” border wars. She inherits her
uncle’s successful business but sells it so she can pretend she is a young boy
and enlists in the Union Army seeking revenge on the Southern Quantrill
bushwhackers who killed her family.
This is a strong women’s rights oriented novel. The historical details about the
border raids and the underground railroad are meticulous, as are the details
about civil war soldiering. We rated this book four hearts. SIGN OUR GUEST
